Canola Learning Centre

Manitoba Canola Learning Centre 1999 Report

The Manitoba Canola Growers Association's (MCGA) Canola Learning Centre has been a leader in agriculture education of school children. It has been in operation for three years. Attendance numbers have continued to rise and now sit at 1,000.

Situated at James Richardson International's (JRI) Kelburn Farm south of Winnipeg, MB, the MCGA's centre gives groups of children the opportunity to walk through and examine various crops with canola taking centre stage. The crop tours are led by MCGA Education and Promotion Co-ordinator Ellen Kubay. During the tour participants learn to identify canola diseases and insects, do insect and other informative scavenger hunts and participate in question and answer sessions.

After each tour, children are allowed to touch canola seed and crush it to see the oil it produces. They are also exposed to a display area where the story of agriculture and canola is told on various panels.

The Canola Council of Canada provided support funding for provincial CLCs last year. For more details on the CLCs, contact the CLC co-ordinator in your province,
