Growers find playing with their canola
results in a trip to Halifax

May 2, 2005 - Winnipeg, Manitoba- As a result of their participation in the Canola Commodity Challenge, an online canola marketing simulation hosted by the Manitoba Canola Grower Association (MCGA), MCGA members Doug Chorney of East Selkirk, Manitoba and Lorne Henkelman of Swan River, Manitoba will be attending the Canola Council of Canada’s 2005 Convention in Halifax this summer. Doug was the performance winner in the Challenge with a $276.14 per tonne ($6.26 per bushel) return by using the canola marketing alternatives used in the Challenge. Lorne was selected from a random draw of the active participants who were MCGA members.

The Canola Commodity Challenge was initiated by the MCGA as a risk-free, real-life opportunity for growers to become more familiar with the tools that can help them improve their return from canola. From January to April 2005, 208 participants determined their cost of production and target price and used this information to market their preset inventory using a number of different alternatives ranging from fixed basis contracts to setting a floor price using Grain Pricing Orders.

A new Challenge is available for interested new and returning participants by going to www.mcgacanola.org and clicking on the Canola Commodity Challenge logo. Watch for more games starting in August.

The MCGA is a grower operated, non-profit organization with the goal to develop and promote the development and marketing of Manitoba grown canola. The Canola Commodity Challenge is a project of the MCGA along with sponsors, Cargill AgHorizons, Manitoba Co-operator, Canola Council of Canada and Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council.
