Canola Math

Bruce Dalgarno is a farmer who farms near Newdale Manitoba.  He plants roughly 1000 acres (or 500 football fields) of canola each year.  On average Bruce can get his canola to yield 35 bushels per acre.  One bushel weighs about 50 lbs. So how many bushels of canola does Bruce get from his 1000 acres of canola that he plants?

1000 acres

       x35  bushels

Answer: 35000 bushels

Now when you crush one bushel of canola you get 11 litres of canola oil.  So from Bruce's 35000 bushels of canola, how many litres of oil can you get?

  35000 bushels

      x11  litres

Answer: 385000 litres of oil

385,000 litres of canola oil is enough oil for every adult 19 years and older living in Winnipeg Manitoba to get one litre of oil each.  So if Bruce's farm alone can supply every adult in Winnipeg Manitoba over 19 years of age with one litre of oil, where does the oil from the rest of the farms go?
