Morning Sessions:

  • High technology Nitrogen Application to a Growing Canola Crop
  • The GreenSeeker’ -  Dr. Guy Lafond, AAFC Indian Head
      • Dr. Guy Lafond, a native of Manitoba, received his BesA from the College de St. Boniface in 1974, his BSc(hons) and MSc from the University of Manitoba in 1978 and 1980, respectively. He received his PhD from the University of Saskatchewan in 1984.

Guy's current areas of interest pertain to new approaches to land management using site specific tools for nutrient management as well trying to develop new tools such as optimum machine size given the irregular shapes of fields and obstacles in a field. He is interested     in the use of robotics technology for doing field scouting. He is also interested in the whole area of harvest management. Guy would like to duplicate the success in direct seeding with harvest management to reduce capital and energy costs. With direct seeding, we went from      a multi-pass system to a one pass system. He thinks that the future in harvest management   is to go from a one or two pass system to a multi-pass system as a way to reduce overall costs, nergy and capital. There is also some fine tuning left to be done with nitrogen management.

  • Insect Identification and Scouting -  Dr. John Gavloski, MAFRI
      • John is an extension entomologist with Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives in Carman.  He conducts monitoring programs for some of Manitoba's major insect pests and provides information on insects and insect management to producers and those working in  the agriculture industry.  He has worked for Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives since 1997.

He has a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology and a M. Sc. in entomology from the University of Guelph, and completed his Ph.D. in the department of entomology at the University of Manitoba.  His Ph.D. research studied how canola and mustard compensate     for feeding by different insects.  He spent a year at the University of Alberta doing post-doctoral research studying flea beetle resistance in canola and mustard before joining Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives.

John has had the opportunity to travel extensively and study insects and their management     in Asia and Latin America. In his spare time, John is a hobby beekeeper, likes running,      and is a leader for Scouts Canada.

  • ‘Bzzzy Bees’ – The Importance of Pollinating Insects in Canola - Rhéal Lafrenière, MAFRI
      • Rhéal was born and raised in the small francophone community of Notre-Dame de

Lourdes, Manitoba.  Rhéal was introduced to honey bees as a high school student when he was employed during the summer with a local beekeeper.  He latter when on to earn his masters degree in Entomology at the University of Manitoba and for the last 11 years has been working for Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives.  Rheal started with MAFRI as the Extension Apiarist providing extension information on bee management, disease control, and pollination to Manitoba’s honey bee and leafcutting bee industry and in 2003 he was appointed to the position of Provincial Apiarist.

Afternoon Sessions:

  • Evaluation of Diseases in the Field: Risk and Incidence- Derwyn Hammond, Canola Council of  Canada
      • Derwyn was raised on his family’s farm west of Brandon, MB, and holds a B. Sc. in    agronomy, and a M. Sc. in soil science, both from the University of Manitoba. He joined the Canola Council of Canada as a technician in the spring of 1994, and became an agronomist  in February of 1995. He is currently the agronomist for Manitoba.

His current responsibilities involve collaborating with Crop Production staff and industry stakeholders to provide agronomic information focused on improving the profitability canola producers, as part of the Canola Council’s extension program.

  • Weather Monitoring for Disease Forecasting- Andy Nadler, MAFRI
      • Andrew Nadler is the Agricultural Meteorologist within the Crops Knowledge Centre of Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives located in Carman.  He works with meteorological monitoring, agrometeorological modeling, and with various soil moisture-related activities.  One of his main responsibilities includes coordinating the Manitoba Agricultural Weather Program which involves the operation of 30+ near real-time climate stations for the delivery of decision support tools related to regional weather conditions and climate.
  • Water Quality and the MCGA Provincial Environmental Plan (PEP) -  Jewel Mazur, MCGA
      • Jewel grew up on a mixed farm near Rossburn and has always had a keen interest in agriculture and the environment.  She attended the University of Manitoba and obtained a bachelor’s degree  in environmental science and a Master’s degree in Natural Resource Management from the   Natural Resources Institute, studying white spruce regeneration in Western Canada.   Jewel has   been an instructor with Assiniboine Community College, manager of the Lake of the Prairies Conservation District and Landscape Stewardship Specialist for Manitoba Agriculture, Food       and Rural Initiatives before being hired by the MCGA to deliver the Provincial Environmental   Plan.  Currently farming with her husband, son and daughter near Russell, Jewel enjoys traveling, hiking and landscaping in her spare time.

  • Canola Nutrition: Hybrids vs OPs -  Dr. Tom Jensen, International Plant Nutrition Institute(IPNI) and  John Heard, MAFRI
      • John is the current Soil Fertility Extension Specialist for Manitoba Agriculture.  He is  schooled in agronomy from University of Guelph and Purdue University in Indiana.  He has work experience in research, extension and training in Ontario.   He manages crops and livestock on a small acreage under the supervision of his wife and 3 children.  He is past  chair of the Certified Crop Adviser program and his current crusade is promotion of the soil test.
