July 19, 2006

The 2006 season of the Canola Learning Centre (CLC) is going to be one of

celebration.  Over the last 10 years, since the inception of CLC, over 10,000

youth have touched canola and other crops at Kelburn farm.

Kelburn Farm is owned and operated by James Richardson International and

with the Manitoba Canola Growers Association; a learning centre was established

in 1997 to educate youth about food production and farming.  Free tours to schools

and daycares run every May through August.  The CLC provides hands on activities,

opportunity to see farm equipment and learn about where food products come from.

“Each year, our enrollment grows and the program just gets better “says Ellen

Pruden, Education and Promotion Coordinator.

In celebration of 10 years, MCGA will be holding two major events along with their

regular tours.  Marion school has already attended the Canola Learning Centre on

June 21 as the adopted school for Part I of the celebrations.  Part II is going to involve

Beaumont and Sunny Side daycares on July 28.  They will be taking part in a unique

Amazing Agriculture Race at the Canola Learning Centre out at Kelburn Farm.  As

a part of the race the youth and daycare staff will learn how agriculture and food are

connected.

The Amazing Agriculture Race will take place on July 28, 2006.   It is guarenteed to be

a fun filled day as daycare kids and staff from Beaumont and Sunny Side daycares will

be exploring the farm.  The race will start at 10:00 am with the kids and staff will be

broken up into small teams. Each team will get a leader and they will set out to

complete twenty different interactive stations that will be spread across the farm. As

they compete each station teams will gathering items, answering questions, doing

experiments, and learning about farming, food production and land stewardship. They

will be making the connection from the farm to the foods they eat everyday.
